How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac – Free & No Upload

Convert HEIC files on macOS with Preview or Photos — or use a private browser converter that never uploads your images.

Modern iPhones and Macs often save images in HEIC format. HEIC offers excellent image quality at a smaller file size than JPG, which helps save storage space.

However, JPG remains more compatible with websites, older apps, Windows devices, printers and online forms. If you need to upload, share or edit a photo, converting HEIC to JPG is often the safest option.

Why Mac Photos Use HEIC

HEIC is the default capture format on modern iPhones because it stores high-quality images in less space. If you transfer those photos to a Mac, they stay HEIC until you export them. macOS can open HEIC natively, but many third-party apps and websites still cannot — so a JPG copy is often the practical choice.

Method 1: Convert HEIC to JPG with Preview

Preview is the fastest built-in method for converting a single HEIC image on Mac.

  1. Open your HEIC file in Preview.
  2. Click File in the menu bar.
  3. Select Export.
  4. Choose JPEG as the format.
  5. Adjust the quality if needed.
  6. Click Save.

Preview will create a new JPG file. Your original HEIC image remains unchanged unless you delete it manually.

Method 2: Export from the Photos App

If your image is stored in the Photos app, you can export it as JPG.

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Select the HEIC photo.
  3. Click File > Export > Export 1 Photo.
  4. Choose JPEG as the photo kind.
  5. Select your preferred quality.
  6. Click Export and choose a destination folder.

This method is useful when you want to export several photos while keeping the originals in your Photos library.

Method 3: Convert HEIC to JPG Online

For a quick conversion without changing settings or installing software, use FormatFlash. The converter processes images locally in your browser, so your photos are not uploaded to a server.

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter.
  2. Drag your HEIC file into the converter.
  3. Select JPG as the output format.
  4. Start the conversion.
  5. Download the JPG file.

It works the same on Windows and iPhone — see our guides to converting HEIC to JPG on Windows and on iPhone.
